Twitter allows us to speak to who we want, when we want. It also gives you the chance to find new people at the touch of a button (or in this case, a key- but it doesn’t quite have the same ring to it!) This is how I found Mikey Thomas.
For those of you who don’t know know who he is, Mikey is an upcoming musician who recently won the Adidas competition – ‘Lyrical masterclass with Example’.
Pretty impressive right? And he’s just like me or you!
Mikey is 21 and originally from Guildford, Surrey but is now studying History at Plymouth University.
You’re probably wondering where the link is with music? Well, from a very young age Mikey has been playing music and was given his first guitar at the age of 8! His mum was a classically trained pianist, and his dad was in several rock bands, giving him the chance to experience music first hand!
He also used to write and play music with friends in his spare time. He told me;
“It was never something I chose to do, it just happened naturally I guess!”
As Mikey told me himself, being an unsigned artist is hard work, you’ve got to get your name out before anyone will be interested. One of the biggest gigs him and his band have performed at so far was for a ‘Super Sweet 16th Party’ where they played to an audience of around 300!
Mikey now writes songs for local musicians telling me:
“I love collaborating with everyone, even people who aren’t musicians! I think its important to get everyone involved with the song writing process. Whether they have a song, lyric or melody, its a great feeling when someone who doesn’t play music is involved.”
He went on to say that he has a long way to go in the music industry but the experiences he’s had so far keep him going and have got him to where he is now.
“I’ve played all different types of gigs up and down the country. Always grinding away, never giving up on the dream!”
He entered the Adidas competition through Twitter where he had to upload an original song to their website. There were several hundred other applications for the competition.
“There were some really good songs on there. I was very honoured when Example picked mine!”
The prize for the competition was a day in the studio with musician, Example where they wrote and recorded a song together.
“It was so interesting to see how he does everything, and how things just escalate from a simple guitar riff and some vocals into a big production song. He also offered to help out with future songs and advice which is probably the best thing to take from the whole experience! It was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity!”
Example said in the video:
“To go from recording in a bedroom, to a studio like this is amazing, I’m just happy to give someone the opportunity. I enjoy seeing how musicians and artists buzz of stuff! I’ve got every bit of faith in him.”
Mikey is planning to release an EP fairly soon, but in the mean time you can hear some of his music on his Youtube and Soundcloud pages!
Definitely one to look out for!
